Play to Win

I was talking to my cousin on the phone, as we did most nights before we headed off to bed and she was watching the Olympics.
“You know I am really good at badminton and they have an Olympic team.” She said as the conversation bounced around as it often did from one topic to the other. I couldn’t help but giggle, I remember playing badminton in the back yard and when we went camping, not exactly a sport that I consider Olympic worthy, but who am I to judge? “Look up and see how I would try out for the Olympic team” she said, “Really…I want to know, because if I am going to play, I am going to play to win!” So I Googled a few terms and found a couple clubs. From what I could discern from the information was that you join a club start winning at the local level and then compete in the international tournaments all the way up to the top. “Hmmm…I will look into it. You will be making big money by then and you can sponsor me because I know I can win!” She said.

After we hung up her words kept popping up into my mind it was refreshing to hear someone that didn’t limit themselves. She never once mentioned any reasons why she could not make it happen, instead she had confidence.

I always admire big thinkers; they are able to create the extraordinary in their lives. Is it really a jump from a casual badminton player to Olympic bound? Ok…maybe it is, but isn’t that how the realizations of most big dreams start…as a leap of faith? What to say that if she starts practicing, joins some local tournaments, that in the four years to the next Olympics, she couldn’t become one of the best badminton players in the world?

Think about your moments of thinking big. How fast did you dismiss it as just a “silly idea” or a case of “daydreaming”?

If we open up to possibilities as we embrace the adage that anything is impossible there would be no limit to where we could go or what we could create in our lives. We can become the visionaries of our own lives, by removing our tendency to think in terms of limits and letting ourselves dream big and then to follow through with action. We are the only ones that limit what we can do. The next time you go to dismiss one of those “daydreams” remember if you are going to dream…dream big and then go after it! In other words- If you are going to play…play to win!

Perseverance on Journey to Self this week

I remember hearing stories from friends about people they new that quit school with only a year left to go, this use to boggle my mind. One day last May I was on my way to school it had been one of those days that was just one challenge after another an

d needless to say I was stressed. It was the end of the semester which meant projects were due and finals were just around the corner. I felt overwhelmed and I thought about how easy my life would be if I didn’t have school on top of everything else. Then like a ton of bricks it hit me, it is moments like the one I was having that made people quit school so close to finishing their degree.

It’s easy to give in, it can be tempting to trick yourself into thinking that giving up a dream is what is best for you or your family. I knew that later down the road not finishing school would not only leave me unfulfilled, but it would make it challenging to secure a good financial future for my family as well. Giving up will never help you live the life you want, instead it creates the life you settle for.

This week on Journey to Self my guest is Scott Suprina and we will be talking about perseverance and the importance of never giving up. Scott is the creator and president of Dreamseats, but like many others, his journey to a successful business did not come without some bumps in the road, including several failed attempts at business.

Join us live Thursday August 14th @ 10am pst/ 11am mnt/ 12pm cst/ 1pm est on Blog Talk Radio ~ http://blogtalkradio.com/journeytoself to listen to Scott’s inspirational story of weathering the storm to see the realization of his dreams.

A Message from Tonya ~ Where has this summer gone?

I can’t believe that it is already August. The days by the pool are slowly coming to an end. I have had an incredible summer and feel myself reluctant to let go. This summer I have been able to work full time doing what I love with Life By Design. LBD has some excellent programs on the horizon and I feel grateful for the time to move Life By Design into some new areas that I feel drawn to, such as offering family management coaching and support as well as assistance, coaching and resources for individuals in business.

I am excited to be celebrating the one year anniversary of my Journey to Self. It is so empowering to see how far JTS has come in it’s first year. I have to admit when I started in August 2007 I had no idea that I was going to awaken another passion inside, but here I am a year later going strong!

Even though I have been on summer break from the University of Wisconsin, I have been taking classes to get certified as a Life and Breakthrough coach and will be starting classes to get certified as a Family Manager Coach very soon. I feel so grateful to Dr. Sally Witt and Coach Sarah Zeldman for helping me fulfill by pursuit of professional development. As reluctant as I am to say good-bye to summer I am also anxious to get back to classes at the UW to finish my last year.

I am about to see the incredible results of my hard work in school and my business. I have had a summer of abundance and am looking forward to an amazing fall…but not quite yet WE STILL HAVE 3 MORE WEEKS OF SUMMER LEFT, so if you haven’t get out there and enjoy it while you still can!

Encouraging our Youths on Journey to Self this week

What would our world be like without creativity and imagination? How would be find a way to balance between the sometime harshness of reality with the enjoyment of being whisked away into a different world where limits seem to melt away as the impossible is magically possible?

Where would we be without those creative thinkers? The true visionaries in history are men and women that thought “outside” the box and dared to go against convention to bring about a new light on an old problem.

As a mother I feel that one of the greatest gifts I can give to my son is to foster his imagination and help his creativity grow. Last week we talked about ways to help our children find their inner voice, become a cheerleader for themselves and others using the Yeah! Yeah! Out Loud (R) tools.

This week we are talking about how we can encourage creativity and imagination in our youth. I am joined this week by a very talented writer, Mollie Kehl Penrod, she is the author of “The Secret of Wellington’s Map” an young adult action adventure that was published in June 2008.

Tune in Thursday August 7th @ 10am pst/ 11am mnt/ 12pm cst/ 1pm est to kick off Journey to Self’s Birthday Bash with Mollie Kehl Penrod and fabulous information on how we can encourage the creativity and imagination in our youths. Listen LIVE at http://blogtalkradio.com/journeytoself.

As apart of Journey to Self’s Birthday Bash we will be giving away a prize during the show, so tune in and join our chat room for details.

~ Is “Can’t” a Real Word?
~ Yeah! Yeah! Out Loud on Journey to Self this week
~ Quote of the Week

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is “Can’t” a Real Word?
Whenever I hear my son say “I can’t” I cringe. When I was a kid my father never let the word “can’t” fly. “There is no such word as can’t” he told us, “Can’t means won’t.” Of course as a kid I never realized the wisdom in those words. My dad always wanted my brother and I to know that we can do anything that we set our minds to and on more than one occasion what he could do when he set his mind to it.
How would your life be better if you eliminated “can’t” from your vocabulary? I know in my life I feel empowered by the thought that I CAN create the life that I want. Through hard work I CAN be the person I want to be, have the body that I want, and have the career that I want.
History is filled with people that brought about change, that made new discoveries, despite being told they “can’t” by others.
How empowered would our kids be if we helped them take “can’t” out of the equation? When every Logan says he “can’t do it.” I share my father’s wisdom with him, “You can do anything that you put your mind to.” A lesson I hope that he carries through out his life like I did.
Yeah! Yeah! Out Loud on Journey to Self this Week
I am so excited to have Kathy Carpenter from Yeah! Yeah! Out Loud this week on Journey to Self!
YYOL(tm) sends the message early as a foundational building block that when the going gets tough, you are your own best “cheer” leader; vs. a fix it later remedy. The YEAH YEAH Out Loud theme helps the child realize the “cheer” leader lies within.
All young children need and deserve high-quality early learning experiences that will prepare them for life, and YYOL is taking this great opportunity to do its’ part to help young children.
Some people have “Ah Ha” moments. Kathy Carpenter has YEAH YEAH Out Loud (YYOL) moments.
As the daughter of a hard-of-hearing and visually impaired father, Kathy had to be LOUD about everything. Her spirited, can-do attitude, nurtured as a child, blossomed with marriage and motherhood. “Being a mom is the best job I ever had” says Kathy (Vancouver resident for over 21 years).
When the kids graduated and moved away to college, I thought my “Yeah Yeah” days were over. Being the “on-line Mom” I ended up fixing things from printers to friend issues; as well as just being available on the other end of a late night check in to say “Hey”. While they used common acronyms to chat, I found my own; YYOL! They could “hear” me!
Then a special invitation came. It was a call from our “son”, then a college freshman, who invited me to be at “Mom’s weekend”. Being the “cheer” leader I am, I felt bad thinking I didn’t have any school colors/spirit items for his college.
It was this experience that was the inspiration which led to the creation of Kiddazy(R) and Hur-Ray (a concept that evolved into a full blown self esteem program) who have become symbols to represent that there is always someone there to “cheer” kids on!
Kiddazy® and Hur-Ray are not limited to one school or group, but their faces say “Yeah Yeah Out Loud” for those that need encouragement, regardless of nationality, ability or status.
Through Hur-Ray (the sun) and Kiddazy(R) (a flower) Kathy found the voice to spread YEAH YEAH everywhere.
Tune in Thursday July 31st at 12pm cst/1pm est. Listen LIVE at http://blogtalkradio.com/journeytoself.
Another Jam-Packed Double Feature on Journey to Self
I have two phenomenal shows planned this week!
At 10am pst/ 11am mnt/ 12pm cst/ 1pm est Tricia Greaves from Be Totally Free!
By the age of 21, Tricia had hit bottom from the diseases of compulsive eating and alcoholism. After trying everything she could think of to overcome my outward symptoms and inner turmoil, including OA, AA, treatment, retreats, eating disorders therapy, self-help books, and diet and exercise, she still couldn’t stop the self-destruction for any length of time, nor did she have any kind of peace. Feeling hopeless she thought she would have to spend the rest of my life battling food, fat, and the insanity of obsession without any lasting reprieve. Until God sent a very important person into her life that helped her learn how to treat herself with love and respect and to care for herself instead of depending on others to take care of her.
Feeling compelled to raise worldwide public awareness about this unique process called Metasteps, in April of 2000 she founded Be Totally Free!, the outreach organization which seeks to effectively and systematically reach people who are suffering from all addictions. Tricia has been given the opportunity to carry this message on various local and national health programs on radio and television.
At 5pm pst/ 6pm mnt/ 7pm cst/ 8pm est Charly Leetham will be joining me to talk about How to Empower the Use of Technology in Our Lives.
Charly has worked for over 20 years in the IT industry, specifically in the area of data communications and local area networking. She is a qualified “tech”, holding an Associate Diploma in Electronics Engineering, she also has a Masters of Business Admin (MBA), specializing in Internet Marketing.
She assists individuals by empowering them to use technology in addition to helping them gain financial freedom using the internet and internet marketing. On her Blog and Website, Charly offers valuable information to help home-based entrepreneurs in their success.
Tune in Thursday July 24th at 12pm cst/1pm est and 7pm cst/8pm est for this jam-packed double feature , Listen LIVE at http://blogtalkradio.com/journeytoself.
