Play to Win

I was talking to my cousin on the phone, as we did most nights before we headed off to bed and she was watching the Olympics.
“You know I am really good at badminton and they have an Olympic team.” She said as the conversation bounced around as it often did from one topic to the other. I couldn’t help but giggle, I remember playing badminton in the back yard and when we went camping, not exactly a sport that I consider Olympic worthy, but who am I to judge? “Look up and see how I would try out for the Olympic team” she said, “Really…I want to know, because if I am going to play, I am going to play to win!” So I Googled a few terms and found a couple clubs. From what I could discern from the information was that you join a club start winning at the local level and then compete in the international tournaments all the way up to the top. “Hmmm…I will look into it. You will be making big money by then and you can sponsor me because I know I can win!” She said.

After we hung up her words kept popping up into my mind it was refreshing to hear someone that didn’t limit themselves. She never once mentioned any reasons why she could not make it happen, instead she had confidence.

I always admire big thinkers; they are able to create the extraordinary in their lives. Is it really a jump from a casual badminton player to Olympic bound? Ok…maybe it is, but isn’t that how the realizations of most big dreams start…as a leap of faith? What to say that if she starts practicing, joins some local tournaments, that in the four years to the next Olympics, she couldn’t become one of the best badminton players in the world?

Think about your moments of thinking big. How fast did you dismiss it as just a “silly idea” or a case of “daydreaming”?

If we open up to possibilities as we embrace the adage that anything is impossible there would be no limit to where we could go or what we could create in our lives. We can become the visionaries of our own lives, by removing our tendency to think in terms of limits and letting ourselves dream big and then to follow through with action. We are the only ones that limit what we can do. The next time you go to dismiss one of those “daydreams” remember if you are going to dream…dream big and then go after it! In other words- If you are going to play…play to win!

I long to accomplish a great and noble task,
but it is my chief duty to accomplish small
